Ricerca, innovazione e tecnologia: il MeltIngLab

di Unimore al centro dello sviluppo di macchine
elettriche e sistemi per la mobilità del futuro

Research, innovation and technology: Unimore’s MeltIngLab at the heart of the development of
electric cars and mobility systems of the future

The MeltIngLab, a laboratory at the “Enzo Ferrari” Department of Engineering at Unimore, focuses on
research and development in the fields of electric machines, drives, and power electronics. Led by Profes-
sor Giovanni Franceschini, with the active participation of other experts, the lab aims to develop innovative
solutions for electric mobility, industrial systems, and energy efficiency. Key research areas include the
design of electric machines through advanced simulations, modelling and simulation of terrestrial vehicles,
and the development of power electronic converters. Additionally, MeltIngLab explores emerging technolo-
gies for next-generation electric vehicles and motors, such as the use of aluminium hairpin windings and
additive manufacturing, and studies digital twins to optimise the lifecycle of electrical systems. The lab
participates in European projects, such as SCAPE and DORNA, and collaborates with industries like ALPEGO
Spa to develop applied solutions, including the award-winning Alysium electric rotary harrow, recognised
at EIMA International 2024. MeltIngLab also promotes educational activities, such as summer schools and
workshops, and has a network of collaborations with universities and research centres to tackle complex
                  technological challenges.
