Rita Cucchiara to Become the Next Rector of Unimore
Professor Rita Cucchiara has been elected Rector of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia
for the term 2025–2031, becoming the first woman to hold this position in the university’s nearly
850-year history. Elected in the second round with 565.3 weighted votes against Professor
Tommaso Fabbri’s 547.8, she will officially assume office on 1 November 2025. A full professor at
the Department of Engineering “Enzo Ferrari”, she is a leading figure in the fields of artificial
intelligence and computer vision, founder of the AImagelab research centre, and director of the
AIRI interdepartmental centre. She has collaborated with major national and international
institutions and companies (including Meta, Amazon, Ferrari, NATO, and Italian ministries) and has
played a key role in shaping AI strategies at both European and national levels. In her post-election
address, she emphasised the importance of shared purpose, university well-being, international
engagement, and sustainable innovation, reaffirming her commitment to a university that is open,
inclusive, and a driver of social and technological progress.
