Economics: a study on “Resilience in Emilia-Romagna” by Unimore

“Sappiamo abbastanza dell’Economia modenese?” (Do we know enough on Modena economy?) is the
title of a seminar recently held at the Marco Biagi Department of Economics with the aim of understanding
the local economy after the impact of the financial crisis and the pandemic, with a view on changes to the
labour market and the challenges to face for the future.
A recent study on the resilience of the regional economy published in 2021 in the prestigious journal Busi-
ness History by experts in economics - including Unimore professors Alberto Rinaldi and Giovanni Solinas,
together with Patrizio Bianchi, Raffaele Giardino, Sandrine Labory - highlights the resilience of the economy
of Emilia Romagna, which has returned to pre-crisis levels in terms of GDP and export value, thanks to
three factors: an industrial structure capable of innovation; the entrepreneurial ability that has reconfigured
the industrial districts, with the international increase of leading local enterprises and with the income of
multinationals; and the new networks of technology transfer that the regional government has activated.
Specifically, the study emphasises how in history Emilia Romagna has successfully faced several shocks,
both structural and economic. The recent overview of market trends has driven actions such as the creation
of the High Technology Network and digital infrastructures (Big Data techno pole), the creation of Clust.

development strategies of the main productive sectors of Emilia-Romagna, and training initiatives.
