Unimore at the International Cherry Symposium

Unimore will take part in the International Cherry Symposium of Macfrut 2022, Fruit & Veg Professional
Show that will be held at the Expo Centre of Rimini from 4 to 6 May 2022. Emilia Romagna is one of the
most productive regions in Italy and boasts 44 products with DOP and IGP marks of origin. Its excellences
also include the cherry, the protagonist of the 39th edition of Macfrut 2022. At the International Cherry
Symposium, the top world experts of cherry production will address economic sustainability, biotechnologies
linked to varietal innovation, farming methods and the management of cherry orchards, coverings, defence
and post-harvest. Italy is the 6th worldwide producer with a volume of 100 thousand tons of cherries and an
export around 10%.
The cherry production sees the strong involvement of Italian universities that thanks to the research car-
ried out and to the continuous studies is contributing to the historical and generational transition that the
agricultural world is experiencing. In this context, Unimore is involved - through the research conducted by
the Department of Life Sciences - in the development of technologies increasingly targeted to guide the
world of cherry production to stage 4.0, namely an efficient and dynamic process intended to lead to greater
environmental sustainability and to offer ecological, social and economic services designed to enhance the
multifunctional role of historical and contemporary fruit biodiversity. There are many research and consultan-
cy contracts that the Department of Life Sciences has in place with many production enterprises. Over time,
Unimore studies have led to revaluate cherry varieties that were nearly extinct. Today, thanks to the role
played by Unimore, Duroni and Vignola cherries boast a production ranging from 60 to 70 thousand quintals
and are the flagship of regional fruit production.
