PINECOR: Unimore coordina il progetto per il

recupero dei rifiuti da apparecchiature elettriche

         ed elettroniche

PINECOR: Unimore coordinates the project for the recovery of waste from electrical and electronic
                  equipment

The activities of the PINECOR project - Integrated eco-efficient WEEE recovery process, supported by the
Italian Ministry for the Environment and Energy Security (MASE), which involves Unimore, as project leader,
under the coordination of Prof. Luisa Barbieri of the Enzo Ferrari Department of Engineering, together with
Treee Srl, Italy’s leading industrial group in the WEEE sector, and Tre-Effe Forniture Idrauliche Industriali Srl,
have come to a head. Waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is growing faster than the
world’s population: according to the Global E-Waste Monitor 2020 more than 74 million tonnes will be gen-
                  erated by 2030. E-waste is an emerging problem, but also a growing opportunity as a source of resources;
a heterogeneous and very complex stream containing a wide range of substances, including various types
of plastics and metals, some of which could be very valuable or very dangerous if not properly managed.
Following WEEE recycling processes, valuable fractions such as metals, plastics and glass can be recovered
in the form of secondary raw materials to be fed back into production cycles. Of great interest in both the
European and Italian panorama is the use of glass from WEEE, a complex objective due to the presence of
contaminants and toxic metal oxides that undermine the purity of the material. Glass-rich fractions and a
fraction containing metals and precious metals were collected from the e-waste. On glass, possible ap-
plications in the ceramic sector are being tested, on the metal-rich and precious fraction, environmentally
sustainable chemical procedures for pure metal deposition with reuse of the extracting solution are being
developed. The partnership between the worlds of research and industry will seek to ensure rapid transfer-
ability to the market, through the development of prototypes and the involvement of stakeholders from the
                  business world.
