Unimore researchers unveil the hidden secrets of the Earth’s depths
An international research team, coordinated by Professor Daniele Brunelli of Unimore, has discovered new
discontinuities in the composition of the Earth’s mantle, contributing to a deeper understanding of the
internal structure of our planet. The study, published in Science Advances, is based on the chemical analysis
of lavas collected in the Atlantic Ocean, particularly at the Romanche megafault, thanks to expeditions
aboard the Nautile submersible. The researchers identified previously unknown lithological components and
developed a new method to extract information about the mantle—otherwise inaccessible—through the
analysis of magmas originating from cold zones of the mantle. This research, conducted in collaboration
with the University of Brest, paves the way for new geodynamic models and holds significant implications for
the study of plate tectonics and magma genesis.
