Study of the Hippocampus: Interview with Prof. Lisa Topolnik, Visiting Professor at the Department
of Biomedical, Metabolic and Neuroscience Sciences
This article summarizes a seminar series in Modena focused on the hippocampus’s role in learning and
memory across four themes: molecular mechanisms, neural circuits, memory engrams, and systems-level
integration. Topics included long-term potentiation (LTP), hippocampal microcircuits, and visualization of
memory traces using advanced imaging and molecular tools. The discussions highlighted the hippocam-
pus’s interaction with the amygdala and neuromodulators in episodic memory. Students engaged actively,
especially in labs using human tissue and cutting-edge techniques. Collaboration between the visiting
professor and Unimore researchers fostered valuable exchanges in cognitive neuroscience. Key research
findings were presented on synaptic plasticity, VIP interneurons in memory regulation, and real-time neural
decoding tools. The hippocampus is underscored as a critical model for studying cognition, with relevance to
clinical and AI research.
