The Modena Charter of Good Practices for Respect of Religious Freedom in the Workplace.
Unimore’s Observatory on Religious Freedom in the Jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights
(ORFECT), led by Professor Vincenzo Pacillo, promotes research on religious freedom, law, and politics in
secular societies. A recent initiative, the Modena Charter of Best Practices for the Respect of Freedom of
Religion in the Workplace, provides practical guidelines for companies to ensure religious freedom, address-
ing issues such as the use of religious symbols and the management of religious holidays. The Charter not
only helps companies comply with laws but also supports the integration of religious diversity as a strategic
value, enhancing employee wellbeing and reducing legal disputes. With the introduction of the Corporate
Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which requires companies to report on their social impact, the
Charter helps demonstrate commitment to religious inclusion. It also aligns with the Corporate Sustainability
Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), ensuring respect for religious diversity across the supply chain. In short,
the Modena Charter represents a step towards more inclusive companies, promoting a culture of mutual
respect and trust, while complementing the existing Italian legal framework with practical guidelines for the
implementation of religious rights in the workplace.
