The Botanical Garden of Unimore: A Restoration Project Between Science,
Architecture and Landscape
The Unimore Botanical Garden, located within the Ducal Gardens and founded in 1758 by Francesco III
d’Este, has recently undergone an extensive restoration and enhancement project. The initiative involved
architectural structures, the landscape system, and plant collections, funded by the Emilia-Romagna Region,
the University, and the NRRP. Key works included the restoration of the greenhouses and the Historic Hall,
seismic upgrading of the buildings, technological adaptation for educational and museum purposes, and the
recovery of the historic parterre. Today, the Garden hosts over 500 plant species arranged in thematic areas,
positioning itself as a centre for biodiversity conservation and scientific education. To mark its reopening,
an illustrated volume was published celebrating the historical and symbolic significance of the garden. The
project returns to the city a renewed scientific and cultural asset, reimagined in both form and function.
